Aikido is a modern Japanese Martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba between the 1920’s and the 1960’s. The name Aikido is composed of three Japanese characters; Ai – love, harmony Ki- energy, spirit and Do- way, path. These characters or concepts can be understood in different ways but for simplicity we may translate aikido as the study of the art of harmony.
The idea of Aikido is to be able to harmonise and blend in the midst of combat rather than clashing force against force. This requires a thorough understanding and study of human movement, intent and timing. Aikido techniques when desired can be used to divert or immobilise rather than damage or kill. In this way harmony in conflict is born. As Ueshiba once said “To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace.”
